If you've ever found that your colors are lacking excitement or that you find color theory confusing, this video will help. Let's build a color wheel and talk about some basic color theory. Here is the basic color wheel that I'll be using:
Here is the video: Note: I'll give some more examples after the video as well as some tips for how to get started using this in your work.
Here are some examples for reference: Primary colors:

How to put this to work for you:Okay, now you have a solid foundation of color theory that you can use in your paintings. There's more to color theory than what this video covers, but you don't need to master everything to start using it. I recommend just trying to incorporate this into your work gradually. For example, pick two complementary colors like blue and orange, and see if you can use that combination of color in your work. The trick is to make it subtle. If you look at my paintings, you can see lots of examples of complements and other theory, but I always try to make it look natural. You don't want your work to be an exercise in color theory. Remember that you don't have to use "pure" colors every time. What if you used blue-violet and yellow-orange as your two complementary colors instead of just regular blue and orange? What if you used gray to tone down orange and left blue bright and vivid? Be creative. Mix things up. Congratulations, you have completed this lesson and have taken one more step toward becoming a successful artist. Now is the time to practice what you have learned so it becomes natural. Soon, this will all become easier and more fun. Follow up:In my complete art course, I talk about other ways to use color theory. I go into much more detail about ways to use color, and I expand on color theory techniques. With a little color theory, you can make your paintings shine. Color is one of the most important things you can study. Study this along with color mixing, and you're all set to do great paintings. |
