Drawing Box Forms Video.

***master-course-leftnav.shtml***

If you ever find that the objects in your drawings and paintings lack depth or volume, then this video will help with that.

This video will go over drawing box forms. We will look at how to make them look more three-dimensional so you can add more depth and volume to your drawings.

We're not going to worry about perspective so much yet. The goal here is just to focus on form. Perspective is great for adding depth and dimension to your work, but I feel that learning about form by itself first will make learning perspective easier later on.

So, let's get started.

Here is the illustration for reference:

How to put this to work for you:

The goal here is to make our drawings (or paintings) look more three-dimensional. We want more depth so it looks more real.

Always think in 3-D as you draw. Think about the form and the structure of the form. Treat everything as though it has real volume.

When you do this, your work will natural start to look more real.

Make your pencil strokes go over forms rather than through them. Think about the direction of the strokes. Think about the direction of the surface of the objects. For example, the top of the box faces up, and the left side faces to the left, so you would not want to use strokes going in the same direction on both of those sides. It would make it look flat.

When you start to think in 3-D as you draw, soon it will become natural and it will get easier.

Congratulations, you have completed this lesson and have taken one more step toward becoming a successful artist. Now is the time to practice what you have learned so it becomes natural. Soon, this will all become easier and more fun.

Follow up:

In my complete art course, I have more videos on form. Other videos talk about round forms, cylinder forms, and complex forms such as those in the human body. I also have some more advanced videos.

You can make your work look more real with some added depth and volume to your objects and figures. Combine this with studies in perspective, and you will have drawings and paintings that look almost 3D.
