Accuracy is very important. With accuracy comes a great work of art on its own. You may find that you don't even need as much shading or detail if you get everything accurate. Of course, I will be covering shading, value, details, linework, lighting, strokes, and much more because they are all important. Articles: Improve Your Portraits by drawing a skull. Read More. Quick Tips:Seeing and measuring...I prefer to train my eye to see without the need for any measuring devices, tracing, or any other method that "helps" you get something down accurately. I want my eyes to be able to see proportions accurately and naturally. In some cases, I do some quick measurments when proportions are hard to see. I also train my eyes to distiguish even the closest of values. This is key for realism. In order to make the lighting work, you must first get the values correct. Styles...There are two basic styles that I will be showing you. One is a classical method that involves using straight lines, especially in the beginning, and very intricate shading. I will also be covering the gesture/ sketching method. I actually combine these two styles when I draw. To the extent that I use one or the other will depend on what I want for a final result. Lines...Lines should be varied from thick to thin. When used properly, this technique will give depth even without shading. Lines can be light or dark as well, and I will show you when to use each. Remember that nothing in life is actually "outlined" by lines. We only use lines because otherwise we would have to shade in entire areas to see where one thing stops and another starts. So, we will use lines very carefully. I will update this section with new articles featuring both my own work and examples from old masters to show each technique. There will be some step-by-step illustrations from time to time as well. Keep checking back for fresh content as I list the articles. |
