If you feel that you are not getting off to the right start with portraits, and as a result your faces just don't look right, then this video will help. This video will show you how to get started with a portrait drawing. The goal here is to get everything placed correctly. So, we're looking for both proportion and accuracy. Getting this step right will make the rest of the drawing much easier. A good start is very important. Of course, you will be improving and correcting the portrait drawing as you go, so don't worry about absolute perfection right away. Here is the finished portrait for your reference:
This is a bit more loose and expressive portrait than I usually do. Doing it this way makes it a bit more fun in my opinion. Of course, these techniques can be used whether you do absolute realism or very expressive portraits. Here is the video:
I hope this video gave you some new ideas for how to start your portrait drawings. Drawing faces is all about accuracy and proportion. After you get that done, it's about shading and tones.
